Nationales_Buchzentrum_GriechenlandThe National Book Centre of Greece, EKEBI, was founded in 1994 as a non-profit organisation by the Greek Ministry of Culture with the objective of establishing a national policy on books, with a particular focus on reading promotion. It awards an annual prize for translators. EKEBI organised the guest country presence of Greece at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2001 and in 2004, it was in charge of the first international book fair in Greece, Scripta, which took place in Thessaloniki (now Thessaloniki Book Fair). The National Book Centre takes part in EU projects, it prepares studies on reading habits in Greece and it is constructing a database on library services in Greece. Furthermore, EKEBI organises conferences and seminars in the field of library systems on a regular basis, and it collects translations from Greek into other languages.
